Located in Jingguan Town, Beibei District, Chongqing, MedAI proposes the world’s first healthcare community that integrates artificial intelligence and neo-medical wellness – redefining high-end, intelligent medical living.
Leveraging the site’s distinct mountainous terrain and natural forest landscape, the masterplan integrates a tertiary rehabilitation hospital, wellness research facilities, an intelligent residential community, and commercial amenities into a comprehensive future-focused ecosystem.
Inspired by Art, Futurism, and AI technology, the ‘Mothership Medical AI’ concept gradually emerged. While responding to the functional requirements of a high-end medical wellness community, the design establishes a new systemic standard for contemporary integrated healthcare living. By departing from traditional elderly care models, the project pioneers a fifth generation, fully intelligent living environment. Through a closed-loop system integrating medical treatment, education, and research, it achieves a synergy between clinical support and daily life experience.
The masterplan comprises 3 distinct yet spatially interconnected building typologies.
The centrepiece of the project is the tertiary rehabilitation hospital. The defining feature of the UFO-shape hospital is a 192m-diameter ellipsoid diagrid shell, providing solar shading to mitigate intense summer radiation in Chongqing, while also facilitating natural ventilation. The medical functions fuses organically with the surrounding natural context to create a tangible ecological medical environment where structure and vegetation intertwine.
The hospital will deliver 360-degree integrated medical services – covering diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation – supported by a team of leading medical experts and enabled by advanced AI applications. Supporting functions including medical staff residences, office areas, a sports centre, dining facilities, and conference spaces are arranged around this main structure, establishing a new spatial paradigm that integrates clinical care with wellness-oriented living.
Characterized by a translucent double-pyramid form, the Experience Centre serves as the central hub for users, patients, visitors, and staff. Situated across the lake from the rehabilitation hospital, its geometric presence engages in a spatial dialogue with the hospital, together forming the central axis and vibrant core of the commercial public plaza to the west of the site.
The Fifth-Generation Intelligent Living Apartments align themselves from the Pyramid form in a shifting linear arrangement to the North and South of the site. The façades are articulated with staggered, curved terraces designed to balance views, natural light, and privacy, effectively integrating residential functions with the surrounding landscape resources.
The project’s spatial planning addresses the evolving residential needs arising from changes in contemporary Chinese family structures. A commercial centre and two ancillary hubs integrate functions such as retail, dining, cultural salons, art exhibitions, and a private cinema, providing comprehensive support for physical activity, leisure, and social interaction. Spatial organization prioritizes opportunities for social engagement. A systematic arrangement of public spaces is designed to foster community bonds, shaping a new model of cohesive wellness-oriented community.
The landscape, on the other hand, integrates principles of geometric naturalistic aesthetics to form a green network seamlessly connected to the architectural functions. Winding pathways, open lawns, and strategically composed planting schemes link the Experience Centre and residential zones, constructing a multi-layered and functionally diverse landscape. The design respects the local topography while responding to the specific demands of new medical wellness models for outdoor activity, social interaction, and recreational space.
Supported by its core components – the tertiary rehabilitation hospital, an immersive high-end Experience Centre, and the Fifth-Generation Intelligent Living Apartments – MedAI establishes a complete ecosystem for the collaborative advancement of medical care, education, and research. Developed in 3 phases, with Phase 1 currently under construction, the project is positioned to become a benchmark for smart health and senior living within the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle.
