Daniel Statham as Keynote Speaker at RIBAxUCL London Forum

Studio Founder Daniel Statham delivered a keynote speech at the “UK–China Forum: Integrated Morphology of Future Cities,” hosted by the Royal Institute of British Architects at UCL.

Titled “Urban Landmarks & Parametric Design: Algorithms and Concepts Shaping the Era,” the speech focused on how AI reconstructs the future of space – innovation in design and urban aesthetics.

In his speech, Daniel traced the developmental trajectory of architecture from the eras of manual craftsmanship, engineering, and digital design through to parametric design and the age of AI. He pointed out that the revolutions that came before parametric design – including the revolution of parametric design itself – optimize architectural form, whereas AI shifts the core of design from “shaping objects” to a much more engaging series of questions: What system are we proposing? What behaviour are we predicting? What experience are we creating?

Drawing on projects such as Future Car Park in Hangzhou, Cloud Bridge in Shanghai, MedAI in Chongqing, and Global Science Park in Suzhou, Daniel proposed that the future is not about AI-generated drawing; instead, architects are undergoing a critical shift from “designing objects” to “designing relationships.”

“Outstanding urban landmarks do not endure through eccentric forms but unique human experiences.”

“AI should tap into local culture and human settlement needs, enabling new technologies to carry the memory of place and build a positive connection among people, nature, and the city.”
